Basement waterproofing prevents water from intruding into the basement of a house or building. There are two different types basement waterproofing.

There is INTERIOR Waterproofing, which uses membranes and French drains along foundation footings and steam walls of the basement. It seals a basement from the outside.  At the side of the footings, new drainage pipes are placed covered with P-gravel and drainage fabric, which redirect water to the exterior – away from the basement – by gravity or a sump pump. It is a highly effective and cost-efficient way to control water intrusions. Interior waterproofing can be done faster than exterior waterproofing.

Then there is Exterior Waterproofing, which consists of excavating foundation walls to the bottom of the footings. Once excavated, the walls are covered with exterior membranes, like Delta or Mira drains, which expand drainage areas to all layers of the soil profile. The dry walls may also be sealed with waterproofing solution. New drainage pipes are placed at the side of the footing and covered with P-gravel and drainage fabric. Exterior waterproofing is the most effective way to prevent structural damage caused by water intrusion, but it is more expensive, and damages the surrounding landscaping, which requires restoration afterwards.

Yes, many people suffer heath problems related to mold. Molds begin growing indoors after their airborne spores land on a wet or damp spot. The growing molds produce allergens and irritants, and, in some cases, toxic substances called mycotoxins. Allergic reactions to mold are common, and symptoms can be immediate or delayed. Some people experience respiratory reactions after inhaling mold – spores – with symptoms similar to hay-fever, such as sneezing, runny nose and red eyes. Mold can also trigger attacks in asthmatics who are sensitive to mold.

Touching mold can trigger similar reactions and can also result in skin rashes or dermatitis. Mold exposure can affect allergic and non-allergic people alike, with irritation to the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs. Mold exposure may stress the immune system and thus provide an avenue for opportunistic infections. Other symptoms unrelated to inhalation or topical exposure are uncommon and individuals suspecting other complications from mold exposure should consult a medical health professional.  Additional resources are available with your state or local health department.

The key to mold control is moisture control.

• You should inspect your house routinely for water leaks – don’t wait until the leak finds you.
• Household water leaks should be fixed and any mold cleaned up promptly.
• Once leaks are found, dry water-damaged items and areas within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth.
